BERCAIL

A “Franco-New Yorker Country Scat” Jazz! by Alice Yvernogeau

This musical project brings together an unprecedented encounter between Vendée laments and the festive jazz of New Orleans. Traditional songs in Parlanjhe, rooted in the Breton marsh region, are transformed into living material for improvisation. Vendée oral tradition becomes a “country scat,” free and joyful. The repertoire draws on the heritage collections of Arexcpo, gathered by Jean-Pierre Bertrand. It gives rise to a body of French song reimagined by Alice Yvernogeau.

At the heart of the project lies a powerful human story connecting past and present.

Singer Alice Yvernogeau reunites with Alexander Warshawsky in New Orleans, the American double bassist she first met as a 6-year-old child, when she was a student and au pair for his family in Montclair, New Jersey.

Today, Alexander Warshawsky is an American jazz double bassist from Montclair, New Jersey, trained from his teenage years under major figures such as Christian McBride and Chick Corea. Active on the contemporary jazz scene, he performs between New York, Chicago, and New Orleans, collaborating with renowned artists while developing his own musical projects.

Alice Yvernogeau also reunites with Enrico Granafei, a virtuoso Italian harmonicist trained at the Manhattan School of Music and the only disciple of Toots Thielemans. Founder and artistic director of the jazz club The Trumpets in Montclair, New Jersey, he is a major figure in transatlantic jazz. She previously collaborated with him on her debut album, All You Need Is A Song, released under the DJAZ Records label in Paris in 2006.

In France, Alice Yvernogeau teams up for this project with Joachim Florent, a French double bassist and composer based in Nantes, trained at the ENM in Villeurbanne and then at the CNSM in Paris. A leading figure in contemporary improvisation, he crafts an open musical language blending jazz, minimalist, and experimental music within innovative, international projects.

A living, transatlantic project where tradition dares to improvise. Alice Yvernogeau draws on her roots to tell her own Franco-New York story.

The inspiration comes largely from Raymonde Yvernogeau, Alice Yvernogeau’s paternal grandmother, a keeper and performer of traditional songs, known for her performances on the Champ de Foire square at the heart of the marsh town. She founded Marais Tradition, a folk group that took her all the way to Romania. Alice Yvernogeau now pays tribute to her, marking 10 years since her passing.
